Is the government capable of actually projecting annual deficits and debt projections in the out years? Of course they are capable, but as this report on national debt shows, our politicians have no desire to show where our borrowing problem is headed. In the graph below, see the difference between projected CBO numbers and a more realistic view of how historical congressional actions, economic activity and actually accounting for trust fund expenditures lead to much worse debt than predicted.
Yes, all of these numbers are mere projections, but there is a lot more realism going on in these slides then what the CBO is projecting. Don't worry, our posterity will thank us for our efforts to take away their national inheritance. After all, I'm sure we are going to start paying this debt off any time.
