I've never been to Belgium, but the casual observer can only sit back and wonder what in the world they've been putting in the water in that nation. Voting in favor for a euthanasia law for children
should cause more than just a pause for Americans given the fact that there are numerous judges that favor utilizing European type "progressive" laws as case precedent and others merely consider anything developed on the Continent as more advanced than our Puritanical viewpoints. While there certainly are no easy options for parents with children painful, debilitating medical conditions, is our society really ready to join others in saying that death is the answer. Previous Belgian law authorized euthanasia for those in "constant and unbearable physical or mental suffering that cannot be alleviated." Just the thought of civil government opening up this option for mere children, with or without parental consent, is almost beyond understanding. Make no mistake about it, this is nothing more than an example of civil government overstepping its bounds and given time, the natural progression in the future will be that the parents will be completely written out of this equation. The foundation of laws for a country must be and are based on the morality and religions of its people. When purposely killing children is the highest standard that a nation will take, there is no doubt that the religious underpinning of that society is humanistic to the core and that nation has no recourse from falling into some aspect of totalitarianism given the malleability of a people influenced by a core lack of eternal values. If you believe that even with this law nothing will really change, don't worry, this pediatrician assures us that Belgian, law or not, has already decided that this is an acceptable way for parents to lead their families. "Doctors do terminate lives, of children as well as adults," he said.
"But today it is done in, let's say, a 'gray zone,' or in the dark,
because it is illegal." America, say hello to our pediatrician of the future.
