Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The First Amendment guarantees, among other things, the individual the right to be free from the Federal Government prohibiting/abridging the exercise of free speech and the freedom of the press. Let's be clear, there is no person names the press, so what we are talking about concerning the press is that described in the Merriam Webster definition under journalism which states that press means "the gathering and publishing or broadcasting of news." There is nothing in the first amendment that circumscribes the power of any individual from being a part of the press or from gathering, publishing or broadcasting news in any form. When the Civil government takes the step of defining who and who is not covered under the 1st Amendment as they are attempting to do as covered in this American Thinker article, then it is nothing more than them trying to remove rights from individuals. Despite whatever intentions they may have, the potential for abuse is catastrophic, for when the Federal Government reserves for itself the right to declare which pool of individuals is covered by each amendment, then in effect, no one has any rights at all.
