The following is a quote from George Orwell, a man who was capable of seeing where the future was heading while others in power were insuring that such a future would come to pass.
“Do you begin to see, then, what kind of world we are creating? It is the exact opposite of the stupid hedonistic Utopias that the old reformers imagined. A world of fear and treachery and torment, a world of trampling and being trampled upon, a world which will grow not less but more merciless as it refines itself.”
In this article from Zero Hedge, a good case is made that both Huxley and Orwell correctly foresaw the totalitarian makeup of today's current society but instead of providing competing views, one was merely the stepping stone for the other.
The truth is that, for the Christian, we have the answer to whatever future holds for us, it is just a matter of staying grounded in the eternal truth that God has given to us in the Scriptures. Truth, for the Christian, does not come through the evening news, our entertainment selections or the internet, but only that which is filtered through the lens of the Scriptures. We must guard to build our individual life, our families, our churches and greater communities on this sure foundation. A solid foundation is the only sure way to withstand the tides of change which bring a daily assault on the way we live and in the end are designed by the great deceiver to alter our resolve and reliance on our Savior.
In the end, a totalitarian government constructed on either Orwell's or Huxley's vision of the future is nothing that should cause us trouble because as Jesus said, "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." As with the case of most dystopian and utopian visions of the future, the story is never complete because they are devoid of this understanding given to us by Christ. And for that reason, we should be careful of events around us as wise stewards of our life and how we live it, but ultimately we must maintain vigilance over that which can impact our soul.
